PARSE is proud to present the Loyola Untitled Juried Exhibition, which showcases the work of undergraduate and graduate students from New Orleans’ colleges and universities. This is the second iteration of this exhibition at PARSE and juried this year by guest curator Rachel Gugelberger.
Referencing both a moment in human evolution and the ongoing dialog between art and technology, "About a Rock" takes the origin of tool use as a point of departure for reflecting on how materials and cunning of hand inform, shape, and at times complicate communication. An exhibition of diverse practices including sculpture, video, photography, painting and works on paper, "About a Rock" showcases the creative process, from reference to the earliest known cave paintings and forms of ritual expression, to the feat of architecture and scientific methods of documenting and archiving the human experience.

Loyola Untitled is the Visual Arts Club run by students at Loyola University, New Orleans. Loyola Untitled organizes and promotes activities that enhance understanding and enjoyment of contemporary art.
“About a Rock” is funded by Loyola University New Orleans. Gift certificates provided by Forstall Art Supply. Kayla Stark received the first place prize and Kristina Knipe was selected as the runner-up.
ABOUT THE CURATOR
Rachel Gugelberger is a New York-based curator, writer and arts administrator, and co-founder of 1@111, a series of process-oriented discussions that focus on a single work, text, curatorial premise or proposition. Rachel has consulted on a variety of artist, museum and gallery projects and has a solid track record in the professional advancement of emerging artists. Independent projects include Data Deluge at Ballroom Marfa, TX; Library Science at Artspace, New Haven, CT; and What is left at Curatorial Research Lab/Winkleman Gallery, New York. Rachel has served as co-director of Sara Meltzer Gallery and interim curator at Exit Art in New York, where she curated the organization’s final exhibitions Every Exit Is an Entrance: 30 Years of Exit Art and Collective/Performative. Her projects have been reviewed in The New York Times, Modern Painters, TimeOut New York, New York Magazine, Paris Review and Performance Art Journal. Essays include “Making Strange: The Parallel Lives of Cheon-Wook Park’s Objects and Images” (Seoul Art Space Geumcheon, 2012), “Many Failed Returns” in Diana Shpungin: (Untitled) Portrait of Dad (Stephan Stoyanov Gallery, 2011) and in “In Through the Out Door” in Unfinished Memories: 30 Years of Exit Art (Steidl, forthcoming). Several of her essays were published in International Art Galleries: Post-War to Post-Millennium (Dumont Literatur/Kunst Verlag, 2009.
